The oral and maxillofacial surgery is the medical-surgical specialty that deals with the prevention, study, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of the pathology of the oral cavity and the craniofacial area and cervical structures directly or indirectly with the same.

The maxillofacial surgeon takes care of extractions of wisdom teeth or dental implants, even cosmetic surgery, oncology and reconstructive surgery.

This specialty is closely related to plastic surgery, neurosurgery and otolaryngology, which works closely with, dental specialty of orthodontics and prosthodontics, overlapping in some aspects.

The problems attending maxillofacial surgeon facial trauma, cleft lip and palate, oral oncology, craniofacial and neck, skull base surgery, reconstructive surgery, facial cosmetic surgery, salivary gland disease (benign and malignant tumors, stones, etc), craniofacial deformities (from minor to major facial deformities malformation syndromes), infectious disease cervicofacial (facial boils and abscesses and cervical), oral implantology (placement and restoration of dental implants osteintegrados), third molars (wisdom teeth) or canines, the maxillary cysts pathology of the oral mucosa and temporomandibular joint (craniomandibular dysfunction, etc.).
