Is the branch of dentistry which studies the supporting structures of teeth, diseases and conditions that affect them. The supporting tissues are known as the periodontium, which includes the gingiva (gums), alveolar bone, cementum, and the periodontal ligament.

Periodontal diseases might take on many different forms but are usually a result of a coalescence of bacterial plaque accumulation of the gingiva and teeth, that host immuno-inflammatory mechanisms and other risk factors which lead to destruction of the supporting bone around natural teeth.

Gum (periodontal) disease is a bacterial infection affecting the gums and bone supporting their teeth. Symptoms include: Bleeding or inflamed gums, loose teeth, bad breath or pain when brushing. Left untreated, gum disease can result in gum damage and even tooth loss. Research suggests an association between gum disease-causing bacteria and other diseases and health concerns.
If untreated, these diseases lead to alveolar bone loss and tooth loss and up to the present day, continues to be the leading cause of tooth loss in adults.

Flossing and good oral care in general, can remove plaque, which helps stop gingivitis before it starts.

The root is the multi-pronged bottom of the tooth that extends into the gums and jaw. Gingivitis is an early stage of periodontitis (periodontal or gum disease). In severe cases of gum disease, very infected gums can cause the roots to loosen and allow the tooth to fall out.

The pulp is the nerve-filled center of the tooth. The pulp is not directly infected in cases of gingivitis, but gum pain may radiate into the nerves in your teeth.
Periodiontal or gum disease, however, may impact the pulp, if the pocket extends to the end of the root, known as the apex.

The crown is the top part of the tooth that you see and brush. The crown is covered with tooth enamel, which helps protect teeth above the gum line. However, it's at and around the gum line that plaque can build up. That's why daily flossing is essential to maintaining healthy gums.

Treatment guidelines stress that periodontal health should be achieved in the least invasive and most cost-effective manner. This is often accomplished through non-surgical periodontal treatment, including scaling and root planing (a careful cleaning of the root surfaces to remove plaque and calculus [tartar] from deep periodontal pockets and to smooth the tooth root to remove bacterial toxins), followed by adjunctive therapy such as local delivery antimicrobials
